Cincture (belt) of the Theotokos

Handmade Orthodox Icon Cincture (belt) of the Theotokos in natural rombolo pine wood. This icon was created on canvas and is made by a craftsman by hand according to the style, tradition and criteria of Byzantine art.

The Sacred Cincture of the Virgin, today divided into three parts, is the only relic or heirloom that has survived from her earthly life and is kept in the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi. According to tradition, the Holy Belt was made of camel hair by the Virgin herself, and after her Dormition, during her Ascension to heaven, she gave it to the apostle Thomas.

Later, two poor pious women in Jerusalem undertook to protect the Sacred Belt. The Virgin Mary, shortly before her Ascension, had instructed John the Evangelist to distribute both of her gowns to them. The work of preservation from generation to generation was continued by a pious virgin descended from this family. During the years of the emperor Arcadius, son of M. Theodosius, the Holy Belt was transferred to Constantinople. He deposited her in a magnificent reliquary, which he called “saint Soron”. The deposit was made on August 31st and we are celebrating this event.
