The Great Martyr Saint George, the so-called Trophy Bearer, is one of our most well-known saints. His memory is commemorated on April 23, or if the day falls before the Resurrection, it is moved to Diakenissimus Monday. He was born in the region of Armenia or Cappadocia, to the Greek Syngelite Gerontius, a soldier during the time of the emperor Diocletian.
As a military saint and liberator collects many wonderful stories and traditions, the most important of which is the one about the killing of the dragon and the rescue of the queen: In Antalya there was a dragon that daily seized people or animals and ate them. The residents had panicked and avoided passing by. Once the king gathered an army and went to kill the wild beast. But he did not succeed and returned idle. So, believing it to be the will of the gods, he ordered all the children of the area to go and surrender to the dragon.
However, when his daughter’s time came, he regretted it but could not keep her. At the lake where the daughter was being carried to the dragon’s cave, she met Agios, who had stopped to water his horse. She told him what was happening and he told her that he would save her as long as she believed in Christ. And so it happened.
