Orthodox Icon Saint Demetrius carved frame in natural rombolo pine wood. This Icon is handcrafted on canvas by a craftsman and embossed according to the style and tradition of Byzantine art.
One of the most glorious and popular saints of the Orthodox Christian Church, together with Saint George. He is the patron saint of Thessaloniki, the city where he was born, lived and martyred. His memory is celebrated (also by Catholics) on October 26 and November 8 for those who follow the Julian Calendar (Old Calendarists). Demetrius was born around 280 in Thessaloniki, during the reign of Emperor Maximian, and came from an aristocratic family.
He enlisted in the Roman army at a young age and rose to the rank of centurion at the age of just 22. A studious and inquisitive nature, he sought the high and the true and found it in the Christian faith, of which he became a prominent preacher in Thessaloniki.
