Handmade Orthodox Icon Virgin Mary of 7 swords carved frame in natural rombolo pine wood. This icon was created on canvas and is made by a craftsman by hand according to the style, tradition and criteria of Byzantine art.
The first pilgrimage to the mother of the seven sorrows is recorded in the 12th century in the Bavarian monastery of Schönau by the Roman Catholic order of the Cistercians. Each sword symbolizes a painful event in the life of the Virgin Mary with the last being the crucifixion and burial of her son. Seven-headed Virgin Marys are also found in the Russian monastery of Agios Panteleimon on the Holy Mount.
