Relief Icon of Saint Ephraim – Full Body

This icon was created on canvas according to the style, tradition, and criteria required by Byzantine art. The wood has been carved in the form of the Saint, offering a three-dimensional depiction of the image.

Saint Ephraim the New Martyr was born as Konstantinos Morfis in Trikala in 1384. After becoming a monk, he was declared a saint by the Orthodox Church on January 3, 1950—the date on which his relics were discovered—and is also commemorated on May 5, the date of his martyrdom.

On May 5, 1426, he suffered horrific torture at the hands of the Turks. He was hung upside down from a tree and ultimately endured a martyr’s death.

He is considered the protector of cancer patients and those suffering from incurable diseases, due to the miracles associated with healing from serious illnesses.
