Relief icon of Archangel Michael

This icon was created on canvas according to the style, tradition, and criteria required by Byzantine art. The wood has been carved in the form of the Archangel, offering a three-dimensional depiction to the image.

Archangel Michael is the only one referred to as an archangel in the Holy Scripture. He is also called “one of the chief princes” and “leader.” His name means “Who is Like God?”

He was the one who announced to Abraham the need to sacrifice his son Isaac, and then prevented it, and the one who appeared to Lot and delivered him and his family from the destruction of Sodom. Michael was also the one who led the people of Israel out of Egypt, appearing as a cloud by day and as fire by night (Ex. 13:26), guiding them to the Promised Land. According to the Eastern Orthodox Church, he and Gabriel belong to the second of the nine ranks of the bodiless powers and are celebrated on November 8. On September 6, the miracle of the Archangel Michael at Chonae in Asia Minor is commemorated. He is the patron saint of Brussels and Kyiv.
